Field Experience

Purpose

ÑÇÖÞÇéÉ«'s teacher certification programs are designed to be field-based, maximizing pre-service teaching experience. The field experience supports students in:

  • Gaining practical classroom exposure
  • Applying educational theory in real-world contexts
  • Reflecting on their fit and interest in the teaching profession

Field Experience Structure

Moravian’s program follows a four-stage model, aligned with academic progression. Undergraduates need to complete all 4 stages of field experience. Post-baccs and MATs will only complete stage 3 and 4:

Stage 1: Early Field Experiences (40-hours)

  • Starts in EDUC 160: Culture, Community & Diversity: Intro. to Critical Pedagogy
  • Introduce foundational exposure to classroom environments
  • Linked directly to introductory education coursework

Stage 2: Early Field Experiences (40 hours)

  • Requires declaration of education certification or major
  • Starts in your 200-level courses and requires more engagement in the classroom

Stage 3: Pre-Student Teaching (150 hours)

  • Occurs during the junior or senior year
  • Involves more sustained and engaged participation in classrooms
  • Prepares students for full-time student teaching by deepening their application of pedagogical skills

Stage 4: Student Teaching (12-14 weeks)

  • A full-time placement over the course of a full semester
  • Capstone teaching experience, often culminating in comprehensive performance assessments

Placement Process

  • Individually arranged by the Director of Field Experience, working in collaboration with education faculty.
  • Each placement is tailored to match coursework, ensuring developmental appropriateness and continuity.
