Field Experience
Purpose
ÑÇÖÞÇéÉ«'s teacher certification programs are designed to be field-based, maximizing pre-service teaching experience. The field experience supports students in:
- Gaining practical classroom exposure
- Applying educational theory in real-world contexts
- Reflecting on their fit and interest in the teaching profession
Field Experience Structure
Moravian’s program follows a four-stage model, aligned with academic progression. Undergraduates need to complete all 4 stages of field experience. Post-baccs and MATs will only complete stage 3 and 4:
Stage 1: Early Field Experiences (40-hours)
- Starts in EDUC 160: Culture, Community & Diversity: Intro. to Critical Pedagogy
- Introduce foundational exposure to classroom environments
- Linked directly to introductory education coursework
Stage 2: Early Field Experiences (40 hours)
- Requires declaration of education certification or major
- Starts in your 200-level courses and requires more engagement in the classroom
Stage 3: Pre-Student Teaching (150 hours)
- Occurs during the junior or senior year
- Involves more sustained and engaged participation in classrooms
- Prepares students for full-time student teaching by deepening their application of pedagogical skills
Stage 4: Student Teaching (12-14 weeks)
- A full-time placement over the course of a full semester
- Capstone teaching experience, often culminating in comprehensive performance assessments
Placement Process
- Individually arranged by the Director of Field Experience, working in collaboration with education faculty.
- Each placement is tailored to match coursework, ensuring developmental appropriateness and continuity.
