What Will You Need to Complete?

Alongside your education coursework and hands-on field experiences, there are several important academic components you’ll need to complete to earn your Secondary Certification. These ensure you’re well-prepared both in your subject area and as a future educator.

Major in a Subject You Love

All Secondary Certification students are required to complete an undergraduate major in the arts, sciences, or humanities as this will become the foundation of your teaching content area.

You’ll be supported every step of the way by both your education advisor and your major advisor, who will help you coordinate:

  • Your major requirements
  • General education courses through LinC or MILE
  • Your certification coursework and field experiences

Meet Pennsylvania Department of Education Requirements 

You’ll also need to complete:

  • 1.5 units in Mathematics – to strengthen your analytical and problem-solving skills
  • 1.5 units in English – to develop your written and verbal communication, essential for effective teaching

Praxis Content Area Exam Codes

To complete your certification in Pennsylvania, you’ll need to pass the Praxis Subject Assessment in your chosen content area. These exams are required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and administered through ETS (Educational Testing Service).

The Moravian SHINES Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support talented STEM undergraduate majors and professionals to become effective K-12 STEM teachers in high-need school districts.
